Hope Index, Vol. 1: Independence Weekend Edition
It's LAUNCH TIME! Upwrite Magazine is live, beer is named America, the sun is shining in the EST and, we are ready to make the Internet great again. It seems fitting that our site would go live on one of the historically worst web traffic days of the year (because we're nontraditional like that), and also that this inaugural edition of the Hope Index column would come to you on a gorgeous and warm Independence Day weekend. To the links!
- Interview: We Are All Moths: Michael Wright interviews Son Lux for one of our favorite sites, the Curator. Even if Son Lux isn't your thing (yet), there are some killer quotes in here about art, paradox, and the artist's role as a public servant. "Amplify the verse of the unheard, unshackle yourself from the acceptable bell curve." Amen.
- On Truth, Religion, and the X-Files: Can we get a moment of silence for The Toast, the mythic and inspirational platform that could always be relied upon to make us laugh, make us think, and make us seriously question our own preconceived judgement about the world of arts at large? While the website might be shuttering its ... links, this piece about an X-Files binge and the Sarah Galo's comparison of faith to a conspiracy theory is thoughtful, digestible, and so very easy to relate to. We all want to believe, Sarah. Let's hope we're on our way.
- Faith and Arts: A Fragile Friendship: This in-depth examination of the state of "Christian" art has a heaviness, a truth, and a simplicity to it that I haven't recognized yet in similar treatments of the topic. Exploring everything from the Christian attraction to "popular" (ie: kinda bad) entertainment to the reluctance of the church to engage with "serious" art, this brief piece is the good stuff.
- Celebrate July with this AMAZING (seriously) compilation of songs by one of our good friends (and future contributor), Claire! Chance the Rapper and CHVRCHES. I promise you. It will feel like summer is happening. Which it is.
Be your beverage of choice beer or LaCroix, we recommend them served cold with a side of faith, art, and love -- with the official Upwrite July playlist playing in the background. Cheers!
